In Japan, robots start working at the airport — humans can no longer cope
At one of Japan's busiest airports, Haneda, they are launching an unusual experiment: robots are being deployed for baggage handling. Japan Airlines has decided to test them in practice starting in May to partially address the acute staff shortage.
The machines will carry suitcases, load luggage, and assist on the tarmac — wherever the work is heavy and physically exhausting.
The reason is simple: tourist numbers are growing, but fewer people are available — the population is aging, and there simply aren't enough workers. Robots can work for hours at a time, without getting tired or complaining.
