MIT sounds alarm: AI discourages students from thinking
Scientists from MIT Media Lab conducted a four-month experiment and found a pattern: students who wrote essays using ChatGPT demonstrated lower cognitive engagement. According to EEG data, memory worked worse and confidence in their own knowledge declined. Those who wrote on their own, on the contrary, used their brains more actively and absorbed the material better.
But it's not that simple. When participants switched roles, it turned out: after independent work, AI can enhance thinking, but the reverse transition is difficult. Perhaps the brain is reorganizing, as it already did with calculators: less routine — more analysis and critical thinking.
