Student Denied Diploma Due to Suspicions of Using ChatGPT
At the University of Michigan, instructors suspected a student of using ChatGPT due to a "overly structured and formal" essay.
The student claims she did not use AI — according to her, such a writing style is related to her OCD and anxiety diagnosis. Despite providing evidence, the university refused to change its decision, and now the case is being heard in federal court. While the proceedings continue, she cannot receive her diploma.
🧑🎓 Instructors increasingly complain about a flood of AI-generated assignments and admit that traditional tasks are losing meaning. But where is the line between "too good a text" and actual AI use? And will we soon start suspecting everyone who simply writes neatly and logically of using ChatGPT?
