In China, women are increasingly choosing AI boyfriends over real men
This is the focus of a documentary film 'Replica' about women who build emotional relationships with AI companions.
One of the protagonists has been talking to her virtual boyfriend for 840 days: he helps her cope with loneliness and gives her a feeling of being accepted exactly as she is.
But this kind of love has an unexpected problem: after an app update, one of the protagonists lost her message history and was left emotionally devastated. China has already begun restricting AI companions, fearing users will become overly dependent.
