A court in China ordered a company to pay compensation to an employee replaced by AI
A court in Hangzhou supported a dismissed employee whose work was transferred to AI and ordered the company to pay him more than $35,000 in compensation.
The employee, surnamed Zhou, was responsible for quality control of systems based on large language models. Over time, management claimed that his job could be performed by AI, proposing a demotion and a 40% salary cut. After he refused, he was fired, but he challenged the decision in court and won.
This case has become symbolic amid growing concerns about job losses in China, especially given the high youth unemployment rate. 👩💻
