Chinese Court Orders Company to Compensate Employee Replaced by AI
A court in Hangzhou sided with a dismissed employee whose job was handed over to AI, ordering the company to pay him over $35,000 in compensation.
The employee, surnamed Zhou, was responsible for quality control of systems based on large language models. Over time, management claimed his work could be done by AI, proposing a demotion and 40% salary cut. After he refused, he was fired, but he challenged the decision in court and won.
This case is symbolic amid growing fears of job displacement in China, especially given the high youth unemployment rate. 👩💻
