Restrained colour version
Add restrained natural-looking colour to the uploaded monochrome photo. Preserve faces, poses, clothes, objects and background shapes. Avoid vivid saturation, added detail and text. Keep lighting and contrast close to the original rather than turning the old image into a modern photoshoot.
Check: Check for skin colour on the collar or sky colour on the hair.
One colour you know
Colourize the uploaded black-and-white photo without changing shapes or expressions. Main object colour: [name the object and its known colour]. Keep other tones muted. Preserve logos, patterns and lettering. Add no elements and do not increase facial detail.
Check: Replace the brackets with your object and its colour before generating.
Repair damage first
Repair deep scratches before adding colour. This makes facial changes easier to spot.
Keep both versions
Keep the monochrome original beside the colour version. Label the latter as colourized in a family archive.
Frequently asked questions
- Can it reveal the true eye colour?
- No. Supply the colour yourself if another source confirms it.
- Why can the face change during colourization?
- The model may redraw details along with colour. Try a more restrained palette on the original.
- Is the colourized output historical evidence?
- Only as a labelled illustration. It does not verify historical details.
- Do I need to sign in or pay?
