Restore an old photo

Remove scratches, soften creases or brighten a faded photo. Keep the original: AI may invent missing details.

Sign in to work. Available models and allowances are shown in your account.

Getting started

  1. Scan the photo without glare and keep a copy.
  2. Choose one task: scratches or fading.
  3. Upload the photo and paste a suitable prompt.
  4. Compare the face, clothing and lettering with the original.

Prompts

Copy a suitable prompt and replace any bracketed instructions.

Remove surface damage

Carefully edit the uploaded old photograph scan: reduce visible scratches and minor creases. Preserve its monochrome appearance, grain, facial features, clothing, background and framing. Add no objects, change no expression and do not invent sharp lettering where the source is unreadable.

Check: Check the eyes and mouth for invented features where scratches crossed them.

Reduce fading without redesigning the face

Use the uploaded old photo. Moderately balance brightness and contrast to make surviving detail easier to see. Preserve the tone, original grain and natural skin. Do not colourize, make the person younger, reshape objects or reconstruct missing portions.

Check: If midtones or fabric texture disappear, request less contrast.

Some details cannot be recovered

Inspect any scratch crossing an eye or date. A plausible replacement does not establish what was in the original.

Add colour separately

Save a good restoration first. Then follow the separate guides to add colour or motion.

Frequently asked questions

Can a scratch crossing the face be removed?
You can try. If the face changes, return to the original and request only minor repairs.
Will tiny letters and dates come back?
Not reliably. The model may invent unreadable characters; verify dates and text separately.
Must I add colour?
No. These prompts keep the original tone.
Do I need to sign in or pay?
Reading and copying are free. Sign in and check your allowance before generating.
