AI Launched in San Francisco to Save Whales from Ship Collisions

In San Francisco Bay, the WhaleSpotter system—a network of cameras and AI—has been deployed to monitor whales around the clock and warn vessels of danger.

The system detects water splashes, movements, and thermal signals from animals even at night and in fog, then sends captains a signal to reduce speed or change course.

Just last year, 21 dead gray whales were found in the bay area, and nearly half of the incidents occurred after collisions with ships. Now AI is literally helping to prevent tragedies in real time ✨
